Intended for students with no previous training in Spanish. Designed to develop basic communicative competence both orally and in writing. All language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as familiarity with cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries will be promoted. This is the first course of a one-year introductory sequence that aims to give students a command of written and spoken language and grammar. Emphasis is on communication skills and the cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples. Self-expression is developed through the use of collaborative, situational, and presentational activities. This course requires the use of an on-line language laboratory component.

This course is for students who have had no previous background in Spanish. Grammar is taught inductively and simple texts are read. Speaking, reading, and writing are emphasized students who have taken SPN 103 will not receive credit for this course.

This introductory language course is designed for beginners of Spanish. This course is not for native or heritage speakers of Spanish. Development in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Introduction to basic vocabulary and grammatical structures. Use of textual materials and multimedia on Hispanic cultural themes. Use of instructional technology.

3 hours, 1 hour multimedia laboratory; 3 creditsThe first in a three-semester introductory sequence for beginners. Emphasis on basic social functions, simple conversation, readings, and writing. Introduction to the cultures where Spanish is spoken. Qualifies as a LOTE (Language Other Than English) course for Pathways College Option purposes.Prerequisites: Open only to students with no prior experience with the language. All other students must take the Brooklyn College language placement test.

Elective Credit

A beginning course in the fundamentals of expression and communication for those who have had no previous work in the language. Regular attendance in the Modern Languages Media Center is required. (foreign lang.). Not open to students who have completed SPN 112. Not open to native/heritage speakers.

Elementary Spanish I introduces the basic elements of the language by providing a foundation in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Using a communicative approach, students will learn listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in cultural and social contexts. One weekly hour of work in the Language Lab is required.

The first course in elementary Spanish emphasizes development of the five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture. The course is primarily in Spanish.Note. Students who take SPA 101 cannot fulfill the 6-credit language requirement by taking SPA 111. Students who take SPA 101 must also take SPA 102 or an intermediate level course to satisfy the BA/BS requirements. Students cannot receive credit for SPA 101 if it is taken after SPA 102.

A one-semester course for students without previous training in the language, or, as indicated by the Language Placement Examination score. Emphasis on correct pronounciation through intensive oral practice, use of the Language Laboratory and audio- visual materials, acquisition of basic vocabulary and the elements of grammar for conversation, comprehension, reading and writing. This course is an introduction to the Spanish language as a medium of communication, it will focus on the oral use of the language with work also in written drills, grammar and composition.

This is a beginning course focused on developing students language skills (listening/speaking, reading/writing). An appreciation of Hispanic culture is integrated into each lesson. Students learn basic grammatical structures such as the present tense of regular and irregular verbs, vocabulary used in everyday activities. Class activities are complemented by required online assignments.The minimum technological requirements for fully online sections of this course are a working camera and microphone. Students are expected to turn on cameras and microphones at their instructor's request.

Spanish Elective Credit

This course is an introduction to Spanish language and culture designed for students who have no previous background in Spanish. Students will develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and explore aspects of Spanish and Spanish-American cultures. Weekly listening, speaking and viewing activities online or in the language laboratory are part of the course.

World Culture - Global Issues

This course in conjunction with SPAN 102 provides a thorough grounding in Spanish grammar and vocabulary, including intensive practice in speaking and listening through the use of audio-video resources. A microphone and speakers (or a headset) and a web camera to interact online with the instructor and to record individual, pair, and group work are required.

Basic principles of a beginner's course designed to give the foundation for understanding, speaking, reading and writing the language; study of simple syntax. Not open to students with credit in SPAN 113 or SPAN 110. This course may be offered as a face-to-face course or as a hybrid course.
