Study of the prime Biblical narratives as well as chief poetic and wisdom sections of both Old and New Testaments, including the Apocrypha. Biblical texts to be read in English. Students write short themes on both texts and their scholarly critiques on these texts.

This course introduces the Judeo-Christian Bible and examines the textual history and exegesis of selected Biblical texts. Students will consider the history of the Bible in English, and explore how the Bible has been used and alluded to in literature. Upon completion of this course, students will have gained insight into the ways that writers and artists approach and understand the Bible.

Topics in Literature

A nondoctrinal introduction to the Bible. Selected books from the Old and New Testament approached as literary and historical documents. Structure, characters, themes, and archetypes.

Introduction to ancient works that have inspired and influenced world literature, including works of Greek and Roman authors, and selections from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Texts are read in English translation.

This course analyzes the Bible's narrative and poetic style using the techniques ofliterary criticism and considers the Bible in literary context. The class will cover thedistinction between the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, the role of the Bible in literary history, and particular aspects of Biblical style, including parallelism, motif, metaphor, parable, and the texts various approaches to narrative. Biblical literature in English translation, including narratives, prophetic literature, gospels, apocalypses, and poetry. Material is studied with attention to its sociological and historical background, its literary value, and its relevance to two religions. Biblical influence on English language literature may be examined in such authors as Milton, Dryden, Smart, Blake, Byron, Melville, Dickinson, and twentieth-century and contemporary English-language poetry. Cannot be taken for credit if student has taken English 153.

This course provides an exploration of The Bible as a multilingual, historical, and literary text open to multiple and evolving interpretations. Emphasis will be on the Bibles literary techniques and its legacy alongside study of the historical periods that produced and are reflected in it. Various books from the Old Testament and the New Testament may be studied from multiple perspectives.
