Introduction to the forms, techniques and approaches to writing in the creative genres, including fiction, poetry, drama and creative nonfiction. Readings, daily assignments and revision pf written work are required. Students will produce a portilio containing a series of creative writings in variuos genree, as well as one piece of critical writing with research.

Through a combination of reading and writing, this course exposes students to the basics of fiction, poetry, and playwriting from the perspective of the practitioner, rather than the perspective of the critic. The class will read literature in three genres, focusing on the craft of how the pieces are structured, and how they achieve their impact on the reader. No prior knowledge of these genres is required. Through a combination of reflection, imitation, writing exercises, and writing assignments, students will produce craft analyses, their own creative works, and reflections on their own creative process.

Craft of Creative Writing introduces students to the literary conventions of creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and playwriting. The course will explore the elements that set the genres apart, the elements they share, and the relationship between reading and writing. Texts will be taken from the four major genres and used as models for students' creative writing. For English majors and minors, this is designated as a writing course.

This course, offered in a workshop format, will introduce students to various aspects of craft writing fiction, poetry, and personal memoir/autobiography. Reading form the work of established writers will serve as a frame for explorations of different genres, focusing on the essentials of literary criticism as a means of understanding these works. Students will be encouraged to pursued publication possibilities in small presses as well as online websites and e-zines.

This multi-genre workshop is an introduction to creative writing and will focus on poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Course work will include both reading and writing in these three genres, writing exercises, and, as students will present copies of their work to the class for discussion, an introduction to workshop methods of critiquing student poems. Weekly reading and writing assignments will introduce students to literary terms, poetic devices and narrative strategies. The emphasis will be on revision and writing as a process. Work includes Reading Response Journal and portfolio of work done in these three genres.

This course introduces students to the writing workshop format. In a workshop environment, students explore three principal genres of creative writing: first-person narrative, fiction, and poetry. We begin each section of the course with discussion of the genre's structural guidelines and close reading of short published work, and follow with exercises to help students gain familiarity with a writer's tools. Then students write and present their original creative work in class for constructive criticism from other workshop members and instructor. Writers then re-think and revise their work, essential steps in the writing process.

Satisfies Flexible Core - Creative Expression

This course introduces students to the genres of creative writing such as poetry, fiction, plays, and/or creative nonfiction by using New York as a writer's laboratory.Field trips to city places such as museums, streets, parks will lead to writing that uses these places and the people. Students will write a variety of creative pieces dealingwith this glimpsed New York life. Reading, writing and analysis of contemporary short fiction, poetry, plays, and nonfiction, focusing on elements pertinent to each form.

This writing workshop is designed for students to study the techniques of twentieth century playwrights and to develop guided practice in writing for the stage. Students will also be required to evaluate their own work and the work of others in the workshop, and to read and discuss five plays. Lectures and discussion on craft issues will include voice, structure, format, submission techniques and the play development process.
