Introduction to prominent women writers from various backgrounds, genres, and periods. Both primary literary works by women and theory about women's literature are read and analyzed. The course will require critical essays, including a researched paper.

This course examines the presence of women in literature as both authors and subjects. How do literary works represent and challenge the traditional social roles assigned to women? How have novels, poetry, and plays shaped powerful cultural myths of femininity? The historical period(s) and genres to be covered in this course will vary: medieval and renaissance authors might include Marie de France and Shakespeare; eighteenth-century writers might include Aphra Behn and Mary Wollstonecraft; Romantic, Victorian and modern authors might include Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Virginia Woolf.

This course focuses on the contributions of women literary artists from a variety of cultures and ethnic groups. It examines how some writers have both reflected the prevailing female stereotypes of their age and background, and also imagined the New Woman. Enrollment is open to both women and men.

This course features analysis of literature by well-known and lesser-known women writers emphasizing conventional and unconventional treatment of gender, including roles, stereotypes, and representations of sex and love. Studying feminist literary criticism about assigned texts, students will examine the interplay of gender, race, class, and sexuality in a writers imaginative work. They will also explore how gender-related cultural norms influence a writers critical reception. By semesters end, students will demonstrate knowledge of women writers from a range of historical periods and cultures.

Selected works by women written in English will be studied with emphasis on the diversity of women's lives and the effect of gender on experience.

Examination of the role of gender in works of literature from the classical period to the present. The differences between heroes and heroines, passivity and aggression, creativity and destructiveness, as seen in literary stereotypes of sexuality.

It surveys texts across culture, class, ethnicity, race, geographical locales, and socio-political context(s).
