Study and practice of various types of writing in technical disciplines, including progress reports, technical proposals and documents such as memoranda and letters.

This is a course in the concepts, tools, and skills of basic business communication, both written and spoken. Using the case study method, the course offers practical experience in researching business problems, editing, and using language to reach different levels of the business audience. Among the types of materials covered are memos, letters, resumes, research reports, and oral presentations. Students are introduced to a broad spectrum of contemporary communication tools. This course is equivalent to ENG 3150 and COM 3150. Students will receive credit for JRN 3150, ENG 3150, or COM 3150. JRN 3150 and COM 3150 may not substitute for each other in the F grade replacement policy.

In this course, students will perform tasks related to the technical writing process in order to write effectively on the job. In addition to learning to generate written documents for the technical and business professions, this course will focus on skills such as defining purpose, understanding readers, understanding clients, constructing effective sentences and paragraphs, composing drafts, testing drafts and revising the quality of finished documents. At the completion of the course, students will be able to create communications that will succeed in the workplace.

This course will focus on the role of writing in engineering, mathematics and computer science. Topics will include practical formats within technical writing, expository and periodical writing on scientific and technological subjects, and other compositional and rhetorical strategies that develop and improve students' abilities in effective written communication. This course introduces students to the kinds of skills they will need to have in technically oriented professional careers. The curriculum is guided by the technical writing needs of business, industry, and society. Students write using various formats including, resumes, application letters, short reports, proposals, business plans, progress reports, and user guides. They review writing process and audience analysis, conventions, graphics, and document design. Web research skills, on-line writing, and library skills are also covered in the course.

Students communicate technical and scientific information to a variety of audiences through written and oral presentations using electronic media such as the Internet, Power Point and graphics programs. Students also analyze readings in science and technology, study technical writing models, and practice collaborative research and presentation.
