Consideration of major groups of microorganisms with emphasis on metabolic activities, chemical composition, ultrastructure, genetics, ecology, and phylogenetic relationships. Basic and advanced microbiological techniques.Prerequisite: BIO 166 and BIO 167, BIO 238 and CHE 168 and CHE 169 and CHE 232 and CHE 233
Prerequisite: CHM 3001 (2004, 3100) and BIO 3001 (2020). Corequisite: CHM 3003 (4300) or CHM 3006 (5300) and departmental permission.
Credits: 4
Hours: 2.0 Lecture hours, 4.0 Laboratory hours
This course includes a general survey of the microbial world with emphasis on evolutionary relationships, a detailed study of the biology of bacteria, i.e., their morphology, growth, metabolism, replication, genetic mechanisms and ecological roles, and a brief review of current attempts to control harmful microorganisms through sterilization, disinfection, and chemotherapy. Laboratory exercises include staining, enumeration, and identification techniques and provide a firm background in basic microbiological technique. Students are required to undertake a library research project and to present their results in both an oral and written format. For students with two other upper-level (3000 or above) courses in natural sciences. This course may serve as the capstone for the Tier III requirement.
BIO 314: General Microbiology College of Staten Island

Credits: 4
Hours: 3.0 Laboratory hours, 3.0 Lecture hours
Topics will include immunology, biotechnology, and the metabolism, genetics, morphology, and growth of microorganisms. Required of Medical Technology majors.
