Literature by Black American authors; consideration of the nature of this literature its characteristic forms, imagery, archetypes and styles. Readings include works of Dunbar, Hughes, Cullen, DuBois, Wright, Ellison, Jones, and Baldwin, with emphasis on prose. The course will require critical essays, including a researched paper.

This course features the study of autobiography, fiction, poetry, and drama by a variety of African American writers. Students will investigate key themes and tropes in the tradition, and will consider how race, gender, class, sexuality, and geography intersect to create diversity of styles, genres, and motifs within Black American literature. By the semesters end, students will be able to analyze and compare the different works studied, with special attention to the dynamics of history, culture, and production of literary texts within the African American community of writers.

Each course is an examination of one or more of the following groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and Caribbean Americans.

A single-semester course dealing with an announced topic, theme, or author.

This course is a survey of African American literature from its beginning to the present day, including the slavery era, the era of accommodation and protest, the Harlem Renaissance, the integrationist movement, the era of black aestheticism, and the post-1960's decades. A study of selected writing by and about people of African descent from the onset of the transatlantic slave trade to the end of Reconstruction. Genres may include folklore, petition, poetry, slave narrative, polemic, journalism, drama, and fiction--addressed to white and nonwhite audiences, in the US or throughout the globe.

These courses will focus on a specific theme, genre, or topic to be announced in advance and will vary each semester. Descriptions of the topic in a particular semester will be available in the English Department before registration. Students may take two such courses for credit, as long as they do not repeat the topic.
